Professional Root Canal Therapy

The term "root canal" tends to frighten patients, but at Midtown Dental Clinic, you have nothing to fear. Our experienced doctors will create a pain-free environment for this common and safe procedure. If you suffer from a toothache, call us for an exam. A root canal isn't always necessary, but if it is, your experience will be a comfortable one.

Root canal treatment (also called root canal therapy or endodontic therapy) is necessary when a cavity reaches all the way to the pulp. In some cases, deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may cause the nerve to be damaged to the point that a root canal is required.

If the pulp has become infected, it can even extend through the root tip and start to eat away at the surrounding bone, which causes an abscess. By the time the pulp has become infected, it must be treated as it cannot heal on its own. This type of infection can even weaken your entire immune system.

Some symptoms that the pulp has become infected include swelling, constant pain, pain caused by pressure from biting, a bad taste in your mouth, and sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets. However, sometimes no symptoms of infection may be noticeable and the infection may not be found until a routine checkup.

A root canal cleans out all infected tooth pulp while also disinfecting the canals of your tooth. The only other option is a complete tooth extraction. The canals of your tooth are then filled in to prevent any further infection. A core buildup and crown are also recommended for restoring the tooth following a root canal.

That may sound like a lot, but the alternative is losing a tooth and the potential of an infection that jeopardizes other teeth. Call Midtown Dental Clinic today to learn more and schedule an exam.
